The anti-bike thief box

Fred Allen

Here is a neat little idea - the agent provocateur bicycle. If professional bicycle thieves are working in a town, as they were in Cambridge, you take your bicycle to a centre where the agent provocateur box is welded to it. In this box you have something or nothing. Something is costly, nothing is cheap. The bicycle thief does not know which, so the service is cheap and effective, the casual thief gets away with it, the professional is certain to get caught, for he is certain to steal an active one. Radio, pheromones or ultrasound can be used to trace the bike. The local press, radio and television get interested, and any sane thief packs it in - the rest get caught.
