CYLINDRICAL PROJECTION MAP OF PROMETHEUS Prometh2.gif is a shaded relief map of Prometheus, the inner F Ring Shepherd satellite of Saturn. It is the same map as Promethe.gif, but reprojected to the Simple Cylindrical projection. As with all maps, it is the cartographer's interpretation and not all features are necessarily certain given the limited data available - this interpretation stretches the data as far as is feasible. The original map was published in its full form with latitude-longitude grid, in: Stooke, P.J., 1993. "The Shapes and Surface Features of Prometheus and Pandora", EARTH, MOON AND PLANETS, V. 62, pp. 199-221. Positions in the map are controlled by a digital shape model, described in that paper. For that map the three dimensional convex hull of the shape model was projected into the Morphographic Conformal Projection (the conventional Stereographic Projection modified for non-spherical worlds). That relief drawing was scanned and reprojected to this cylindrical projection. If nothing else, the new projection reveals the inadequacy of the cylindrical projection for portraying very elongated objects. Longitude 0, which faces Saturn, runs down the centre of the map. The lighting in the original shaded relief drawing was not consistently from the left (west), to give uniform lighting along ridges and valleys near the North Pole of Prometheus. For this representation the portrayal in a few areas has been altered to ensure that lighting is uniformly from the west. This version of the file, with labels intact, is in the public domain.
