LANtastic(R) Network Operating System 6.0 with Artisoft Exchange(tm) mail, fax and scheduler ARTISOFT(R) LANtastic 6.0 combines state-of-the-art computer networking with built-in Artisoft Exchange electronic mail, scheduler and fax capabilities. So you can communicate around the office -- or around the world -- right from your desk. You need no third-party software, no time-wasting steps. With version 6.0 of LANtastic, Artisoft has taken a giant step forward in integrating the office LAN into a seamless business communication system. The LANtastic system is flexible enough to allow you to configure your network as peer-to- peer, dedicated server, or a combination of both. You'll print faster, share files faster and work faster. If you already have a network, LANtastic 6.0 is the ideal workgroup solution. With our universal client, you have seamless access to the broadest range of networks around --including Novell, IBM and Microsoft to name a few. LANtastic has always been known for its ease of use. To make it even better, we tested every feature in the Artisoft Usability Lab. The results are reflected in a version that is easier and more intuitive to use than our previous award-winning product. Faster modular design Version 6.0 continues advancing network speed, with up to 15% faster data transfer than v5.0. LANtastic software is now modular, so you only load the server features you need. A burst mode transfers data faster, while using less memory. Built-in file and record locking add to LANtastic v6.0's performance. Screen captures: DOS and Windows connectivity screens Connects with many network platforms This LANtastic network is ready for today's offices that have more than one network in place. LANtastic clients connect seamlessly with NetWare(R) Core Protocol (NCP) servers and with Server Message Block (SMB) protocol used in Windows(tm) for Workgroups, Windows NT and LAN Server. Integrated Artisoft Office mail and scheduler Perhaps the most exciting addition to LANtastic is Artisoft Exchange communications. This built-in store-and-forward system includes sophisticated electronic mail. But that's only the beginning. Artisoft Exchange communicates through fax, pagers and links to external mail systems such as MCI Mail and MHS-compatible systems. Artisoft Exchange integrates LANtastic's network user account database with the mail directory for easy installation and management. A built-in personal and group scheduler uses the mail transport system to help coordinate meetings and appointments for the entire office. Artisoft Exchange is part of LANtastic 6.0's Windows interface. It uses the network accounts and resources you've already set up for the Mail and Scheduler. When you change an appointment for a group of users, the Scheduler sends a mail message notifying users of the change. The flexibility of a true peer system Many other network operating systems require a dedicated server -- a separate computer to run the network. The LANtastic system lets you choose whether to dedicate a server or run the server on someone's workstation. Every PC -- even an XT model with 640K of RAM and a 20MB hard drive -- can be a workstation, using network files and resources. Or any computer can be a true peer -- a server sharing its resources while it is also someone's workstation. Any server can use the built-in ALONE(tm) program to dedicate its resources (such as files, storage, disk and CD-ROM drives, printers and other peripherals) to other computers on the network. There's still more. If your office needs a server for general tasks or a specialized use, you can optimize it for your specific purpose, be it as a file server, a print server or a central database. You can use it to maintain for user accounts and security, for managing network stations remotely, for remote booting or a number of other uses. Managing the network Managers on a LANtastic network are authorized to remotely control servers or set up central network services. This version of LANtastic enables a network manager to check every server's configuration, status and performance. Screen and sound alerts tell when a server 's workload exceeds the thresholds you set. A network manager can also import and export user accounts in several text formats, where they can be managed in an external database. To set up a new user, the administrator simply adjusts a standard configuration to the person's access rights. Access Control Lists (ACL) and group accounts simplify security settings for groups of network users. Tight security LANtastic networks have been hailed for sophisticated security. Thirty levels of security define which users have access to hard drives, subdirectories and individual files on the network. Because many network users have similar privileges, managers can set up standard Access Control Lists for groups of users, assigning identical privileges to many people at once. Within those groups, the manager can make exceptions for individual users. Advanced print job control LANtastic network users can send print jobs to any network printer -- not just those attached to a server. LANtastic v6.0 enables any workstation to run a simple TSR (terminate and stay resident) program to take over a print server's job. The workstation collects print jobs from multiple servers across the network and sends them to as many as seven attached printers. You're free to put your printers in the most convenient places. Versatile printing capabilities have long been a LANtastic hallmark. The network lets you print a file before that file is completely stored in the printer server's queue, or specify a later time to run a long print job when it will not tie up the system. More flexibility for custom control LANtastic v6.0 is more flexible, with features for larger offices, easier network management, and the ability to connect to other networks. LANtastic lets you choose whether to use DOS menus or Windows controls. It supports any adapter driver that meets the Network Driver Interface Specification (NDIS) industry standard. LANtastic networks now have more features to help manage a large office or workgroup. Modular servers let you load only the features you need when you're concerned with the network's memory requirements. Artisoft continues to respond to user requests and advancing technology. LANtastic networks remain a powerful, reliable way for people to share information and computing resources.
