If you talk to the bat, you'll learn that you need to place three will of the wisps in the bowl to get light.
Each color wisp adds its own color light to the room.
And different wisps in combination create different colors. (Putting a red wisp in the same bowl as a blue wisp gives you purple light, for example.)
If you want to take a wisp out of the bowl, use the ladle on it.
