This is mainly a matter of preference. Play around with different configurations if you're unsure. Unfortunately, since you're limited to a single saved game, this may grow tiresome fast.
There are some basic decisions about party makeup that I've found to be helpful. Variety is usually better than having a party comprised of only a single class. It also helps to remember who can be attacked in melee (hand to hand) combat.
