Current Linux/m68k Releases
As of today, the following versions of the
Linux/m68k kernel are "current":
- Linux/m68k 2.0.36, released 5 February 1999, is a stable 2.0
series release. Users of earlier versions should probably upgrade;
it's well worth it.
- Linux/m68k 2.2.10, released 19 July 1999, is a developmental release
(despite the 2.2 version number). This kernel is recommended only for
kernel hackers and fans of the "bleeding edge" at this
point.
- Linux/m68k 2.3.16, released 3 September 1999, is an experimental
release.
These kernel source trees can be downloaded at Sunsite Denmark.
The current version numbers of the mainstream kernel can be found at
Helsinki
University's Linux Versions page. [Finland]

Changes at this site
The lowdown on what Emacs and I (in that order) decided to do to this
site, and when. On added and updated links, the links here normally
just point to the section of these pages where the addition/update was
made.
- Sep 4: Martin "Joey" Schulze is coordinating another
Linux/m68k hackers' meeting in Oldenburg for Oct. 15 and 16. For more
details, read this email from Joey.
- Aug 23: The registration site has moved to www.linux-m68k.org;
please note that it is not currently mirrored to other
servers, although that is likely to change soon.
- Aug 21: Added Debian banner ad, and put mirrors on notice that the
clark.net mirror is going away real soon now.
- Aug 12: Linux/m68k now has over 2000 registered users!
- Aug 10: Roman Hodek and Geert Uytterhoeven are among those giving
presentations at Linux
Kongress 99 in Augsburg, Germany. The Linux Kongress will be held
September 8-10, 1999. Roman will be giving a talk on the Debian build
daemon and a Debian packaging tutorial (with Martin "Joey"
Schulze). Geert will discuss the framebuffer interface in XFree86.
Other talks will discuss the ext2->ext3 transition and various things
coming in Linux 2.4.
- Aug 9: Added a link to Dave Ellison's page about the #Linux-m68k
IRC channel on the Elsewhere on the Web page.
- Aug 5: With the feature freeze coming in two weeks (according to
Linus), Jes is encouraging people to get to work on adapting the
serial drivers to remove the m68kserial layer and cleaning up the
partition block code, so he can submit these changes in time for 2.4.
- Aug 4: According to Roman Hodek, Mozilla (Seamonkey Milestone 8) compiles and runs on m68k. You
can download a Debian package from the unstable (potato) branch.
- Jul 10: The original US site (at www.clark.net) will be going away
in the next two months.
- Jun 24: Added a new Debian book to the books
page.
- Jun 21: Another US
mirror is now online!
- Jun 20: Added links to archives for
the Mac list.
- Jun 7: Added banner ad to the home page for the Ottawa Linux
Symposium; Alan Cox and Jes Sørensen will be among the
featured guests. (Incidentally, is that the longest domain name
you've ever seen?)
- Jun 6: David Huggins-Daines has taken over the
mac.linux-m68k.org subdomain; numerous changes around here to
compensate.
- May 21: Added information about a partitioning bug in the Debian installer that affects Atari
users.
- May 19: There's a new list for Q40 users; see the mailing lists page for details.
- May 17: David Huggins-Daines let me know about a FTP site for the Mac port which he
maintains.
- May 14: The linux-m68k list archives have moved URLs; see the mailing lists page for details. Also,
you can now add a Linux/m68k slashbox to your custom home page at Slashdot, everyone's favorite geek
site. I added a few more window
managers to the rather pathetic directory of cool Linux-related
sites.
- May 8: If you use My
Netscape, there's now a Linux/m68k channel; you can add it by
following this
link (yes, I know it's lame... it'll be cooler eventually). The
Norwegian mirror will be
soon accessible by a shorter URL,
http://www.no.linux-m68k.org/.
- May 4: Dropped University of Mississippi mirror (I can't run rsync
there, so updates were taking forever). Also, if you've got a site
that can snarf My
Netscape-style RDF channels, there's one at
http://www.linux-m68k.org/linux-m68k.rdf.
- May 3: New FAQ release.
- May 2: Updated all of the Debian
installation guides for Debian 2.1 (slink), putting the ones for
the Amiga and VMEbus single-board computers online at this site.
Fixed a few URLs on the same page.
- Apr 9-11: Added more books.
- Apr 9: Added a link to amiga-fdisk on the ongoing projects list. Fixed all
sunsite.unc.edu references to use metalab.unc.edu.
- Apr 7: Corrected a link on the books
page. Added links on the distributions page
for Whiteline's Linux/m68k distribution and Steve McIntyre (another
Debian developer selling m68k CDs).
- Feb 24: As soon as Network Solutions gets its act together, a
T3-connected mirror will
be coming online.
- Feb 19: Richard Hirst has more information on the Tadpole
port.
- Feb 18: The Q40 port's diffs are now available at Erlangen.
- Feb 14: Debian GNU/Linux 2.1
was officially released on 9 March 1999 for four architectures,
including m68k. CD sets of 2.1 for m68k will be available from me.
- Nov 9: Due to Microsoft's takeover of LinkExchange, we are no
longer participating in LinkExchange's banner advertising program.
However, the counter will remain (since Microsoft can't advertise on
it).
- Oct 17: Updated the mailing list
subscription info.
- Oct 11: Finally got around to putting another mirror online.
- Oct 3: At the urging of Ron Flory, downgraded the importance of
the ext2 byteswap mini-HOWTO; also added
some more explanatory text at the beginning.
- Sep 28: Converted pages to the new LinkExchange banner program.
- Sep 24: Added a new Distributions page,
now that there are three (at least).
- Aug 28: All sorts of cool things have been changed in the past few
days... lots of general housecleaning that should have been done eons ago.
- Aug 4: Reorganized the Information page,
to reflect a couple of newly-available installation guides. Also,
part of the FAQ is missing for some reason;
I need to go and fight with nsgmls some more.
