1. Description

1.1 What is it - Description

Hefty FTP is a queue based FTP client for accessing FTP servers on the Internet. It is shareware ( US$20 ).

1.2 Why is it - Benefits

Another FTP client for the Mac? Why on earth - the Mac has some excellent FTP clients?

Well the desire to write Hefty FTP resulted from my own dissatisfaction with the available FTP clients. Coming from a PC background ( cough cough! ), I was used to using FTP clients that showed more of what was happening, and that could queue and resume.

The principle behind the design of Hefty FTP was to separate the FTP browsing function from the main file transfer functions so as to be able to queue uploads and downloads while browsing other sites. With Hefty FTP you do not have to wait for a transfer to complete before looking at a new remote folder or connecting to a new site.

Features and Benefits include:

* Powerful control interface that lets you see the FTP dialog, local folder, remote folder, queue and queue progress all at once
* Support for an unlimited number of bookmark files with facilities to import from other Mac FTP clients
* Allows you to browse an FTP site while simultaneously doing up to four FTP and one HTTP ( Web ) transfers
* Connection retries and transfer resumes within user-defined parameters
* Both FTP and HTTP transfer drivers have retry and resume capabilities
* Inbuilt queue stop/start scheduler, and support for basic queue control via Applescript
* Automatic conversion of files with resource forks to MacBinary format on upload
* Facility to drag-and-drop or enter FTP and HTTP URLs from other programs such as browsers
* Visibility of all client-server dialogues
* Facility to place queue items on hold for later transferring

1.3 What is it not?

Hefty FTP's user interface is different to most other Mac FTP clients. It does not use a Finder-like interface, and consequently will not be every Mac user's cup of tea. I have no intention of giving Hefty FTP a Finder-like interface - I prefer to see what is going on when using FTP. People who, like me, have moved from the PC to the Mac are however likely to find the interface more familiar.

1.4 Shareware Limitations

The unregistered version is limited to being run 50 times.

1.5 Other Limitations

None at this time.

1.6 Future Possibilities

Suggestions welcome.
