The streams which feed the infant Ribble all have their sources within the Yorkshire Dales National Park. This was established in 1954, and protects 1,761 square kilometres (680 sq. miles) of northern England. It straddles the middle of the Pennine hills. It contains the most magnificent limestone scenery in Britain.
