The Web dates back to 1989, when a chap called Tim Berners-Lee wanted to make it easier for the physicists at the European Particle Physics Laboratory (CERN) to share information. He came up with a system which enabled his colleagues to publish documents on the Internet and connect them together with hyperlinks. Instead of having to know how to find the next document, you simply clicked on the link (a highlighted word or phrase) and jumped straight to it.
