Files labeled Beta means that the product is a current product, but the download files are still in the development or test process. Please consult with Technical Support before using BETA firmware in a production environment. These downloads are fully supported by Comtrol except in production installations.

Comtrol recommends verifying that the DeviceMaster UP contains the latest Modbus Server version before configuring serial ports.

You can check the firmware version on the DeviceMaster UP if Modbus Server was loaded on the DeviceMaster UP and if necessary, upload the latest version of Modbus Server using PortVision Plus.

Checking the Modbus Server Version

Use this procedure to check the Modbus Server version that resides on the DeviceMaster UP.

  1. If necessary, start PortVision Plus and scan the network.

  2. Check the Modbus Server version number of the Software Version for the DeviceMaster UP.

  3. Check to see if a later version is available and if necessary, upload Modbus Server

  4. If the Modbus Server version on the DeviceMaster UP is current, you are ready to configure the serial ports.

Uploading Modbus Server

Use this procedure to upload the latest version of Modbus Server into the DeviceMaster UP.

[Note]
Note

Technical support does not recommend updating firmware across a WAN. For best results, connect the DeviceMaster UP directly to a PC or laptop to upload Modbus Server.

  1. Make sure that you have located the latest Modbus Server version.

  2. Execute the Modbus Server .msi file.

    1. Click Run to start the file installation procedure or Save to save the file to your site, and then execute the .msi file and click Start to begin the file installation procedure.

    2. If necessary, click Run to any Internet Security warnings.

    3. Click Next at the Modbus Server Setup Wizard.

    4. Click I accept the terms in the License Agreement and then Next.

    5. Click Next to install Modbus Server in the default directory (C:\Comtrol\Modbus_Server\) or browse to another location. Make sure that you remember the path where you place the files because you will need to access the .bin file during the installation procedure.

    6. Click Install and the click Finish.

  3. If necessary, open PortVision Plus.

  4. Right-click the DeviceMaster UP for which you want to update, click Upload Firmware, browse to the Modbus Server .bin file, and then click Open.

  5. Click Yes to the Upload Firmware message that warns you that this is a sensitive process. It may take a few moments for Modbus Server to upload onto the DeviceMaster UP. The DeviceMaster UP will reboot itself during the upload process.

  6. Click Ok to the advisory message about waiting to use the DeviceMaster UP until the status reads ON-LINE. In the next polling cycle, PortVision Plus updates the List View pane and displays the new Modbus Server version.

  7. Optionally, refer to the interface programming information and the sample PLC programs for Modbus Server.

  8. Configure the DeviceMaster UP port characteristics for your environment using the embedded web pages on the DeviceMaster UP.

There are two ways that you can access the embedded web pages:

    • Open PortVision Plus, right-click on the appropriate DeviceMaster UP unit and select Web Manager.

    • Open your web browser and enter the IP address of the DeviceMaster UP.

Updating Bootloader

[Note]
Note

Technical Support does not recommend updating Bootloader across a WAN. For best results, connect the DeviceMaster UP directly to a PC or laptop to upload Bootloader.

Make sure that power is not interrupted while uploading Bootloader. Power interruption while uploading Bootloader will require that the DeviceMaster UP must be sent into Comtrol so that it can be reflashed.

If you are not successful uploading Modbus Server into the DeviceMaster UP, do not upload Bootloader.

Use this procedure to upload the latest version of Bootloader into the DeviceMaster UP.

  1. Make sure that you have located the latest Bootloader version.
