It's not only "not recommended", it's specifically against the standard.
A short stub, up to 4" is considered OK. The correct layout would be to
put the hard drive between the CD and the Zip, with the Zip's socket
attached to the end of the internal cable. Then you terminate the
controller and Zip drive and everything should be spot on.

I never had any problems with the Zip's internal termination, although
I now use an external terminator plugged into the Zip.
