The cdxl datatype uses standard amiga OS functions which does look
good on graphics cards, the fileformat may be based on bitplanes but
the playback is not, animation datatype v41 plays this fine on gfx
cards via chunky pixel modes and the HAM8 is translated to 8bits or
high colour by the animation datatype(this is the superclass of all
animation datatypes which also include the mpeg datatypes).
