Another option would be to give these "optional" gadgets their own window,
but make it borderless so it looked like it was part of the first window.

Then it could have it's own separate GTlist and the contents of the first
list would never need to be altered or redrawn...

Of course this would become complicated (but not impossible) if you have
several windows open at the same time along with this one, but pretty
simple if only the one window is on the screen. It depends on the nature
of the program, but might be an option...
