General advise: Don't mix and match prep software if you use one stick to
it don't use GVP prep one time and hdtoolbox the next time on the same drive.

Yes that's possible.

Write protect pins
If the write protect pin is jumpered to ground, the drive will inhibit
SCSI commands that alter the customer data area portion of the media
from being performed.

You're lucky then IBM has a detailed database of just about any drive it
made with all the jumper settings operational limits etc.

(still got the pages i downloaded for my IBM 0662S12 (jumper settings were
at http://www.storage.ibm.com/techsup/hddtech/0662s/0662sjum.htm so don't
yell if above link doesn't work it's gestimated)

The ibm drive i have will lock up the buss when it not called in sync transfer
mode, maybe something similar is happening in your case.
