Its the init string of the modems and their defaults that is causing this.
Some modems are set to report the connect rate others the DTR by default,
but you can tell it to report whichever you want in the init string. Check
the manual for the right option.

Oh, and are you sure the zip archive was actually compressed as you can set
it to only store files i.e. "zip -0 archive.zip filelist". That would
explain the very high rate on an apparantly compressed file.
