it's OK boys, it still acts pretty weird, but at least it now works....
i simply installed the (very old) 68040.library that came on my original
powerup cd. I don't recall installing another version of this library though?
thanks for your fast responses, i was kinda desperate (i thought i had tried
everything and was considering a total re-install.)
