Subject:[bvppc] PPC Daemon

From: Robbin Van Ooy <amiga@multiweb.nl>

Project: PPC Daemon

Ive been thinking.. About that PPC Kernel war.. You know, there's 2
kernels, PowerUP, and WarpOS. The two wont work in parallel. Im fed up with
that. Neither Phase5, nor Haage&partner are willing to solve this problem,
so, perhaps its time for a third party to step in. This is where PPC Daemon
comes in.

A PPC program can be compiled for both kernels. Many PPC programs already
have two versions, one for each kernel. But it's very annoying, how many
times have you fired up a PowerUP prog, only to find out that PowerUP has
been terminated, because you already started a WarpOS program, which means
you have to look for the WarpOS version of the program you're trying to
run. Or worse, what if you only have one version of said program?

This is where PPC Daemon comes in.

What if someone wrote some sort of daemon, that's installed in WBstartup.
The daemon continually checks which kernel is active. Now, when the user
starts a PPC program that has been adapted for PPC Daemon, the program asks
(I believe this is some soft of Call() thingie ;D) PPC daemon which version
is running, then decided which version of the program it should run.

In short:

1) Daemon is active in WBStartup
2) User starts WarpOS program, PowerUP is terminated.
3) Daemon detects WarpOS as the active kernel
4) user starts Daemon-adapted program (DAP)
5) DAP calls PPC Daemon to see which kernel is active
6) Daemon replies: WarpOS!
7) Startup-code of DAP fires up WarpOS version

etc.

Wouldnt that make life easier?

Opinions, please. And, if someone is willing to give it a shot, please do
so!
