It turns out that printing with OS 3.1 was not fine. After further
investigation it seems that the problem was with port-handler. I discovered
this when I installed Stephan Rupprecht's new port-handler with OS 3.5 and
the problem went away.
So I took a look at my OS 3.1 partition and found that I was using an
earlier version of Stephan Rupprecht's port-handler. Reverting back to the
OS 3.1 version resulted in the same problem with 3.1. i.e., no async
printing from GoldEd.
JSB> I contacted the author of GoldEd and he replied that the printing
JSB> routines in GoldEd have not changed in a long time.
I reported all this to Dietmar Eilert and I just heard from him today. He
said he found a problem with GoldED so I guess the problem is fixed.
It is hard to believe that as long as OS 3.1 has been around that nobody
reported the problem before. {Shrug}
