On 23-Jan-00, Brian Haug was heard muttering:

BH> I don't think I really need '3d'.. Does anyone know if Spectrum is
BH> upgradeable to 4M?

No.

BH> Judging by the amount of motherboard chip-mem used on the rare occasions
BH> when I set a browser to 256 colors, I would think that more than 2M
BH> would be _needed_?!??

The Spectrum uses a high-speed page-swapping technique to move non-displayed
screens to FastRAM, so anything above 2M is unnecessary. Even 1M cards are
just as powerful, but have lower bit-depths at the highest resolutions.

BH> If I got a gfx card without all this 'pass through-flicker fixer-scan
BH> doubler' "stuff", do they still treat the boot-menu screen as if it is
BH> just another screen?? (i.e. if I got another monitor that didn't display
BH> this screen normally and just 'wraps' it around, would I still see it?
BH> I could live with the 'wraping' - but do gfx cards COMPLETELY block the
BH> boot-menu screen?)

(Most) graphics cards don't have anything to do with the bootscreens. To
view the bootscreens you need either 1. A 15kHz-capable monitor plugged
into the Amiga's video port, or 2. A cable running from the Amiga's video
port to the card's pass-through port. The connected monitor must be
15kHz-capable.

BH> (sigh) This is bringing up more questions than answers! ;)

BH> I'm now leaning toward the Spectrum again because of the 'boot-screen
BH> stuff', but would lean back toward the CV64/3D because of it's mem
BH> size...

Memory size is nearly irrelevant on the Spectrum (2M will give you more
bit-depths on higher resolutions).
