They are very different in use. Photogenics is aimed at experimentation,
application of effects, discovery.
Art Effect is a more formal image processing and paint program, loosely
modelled on Photoshop, but better than Photoshop for painting as it allows
you to cut out brushes and paint with them in the traditional Amiga manner.
Photogenics doesn't cut out brushes (an older version did, so it may
return).
Photogenics has a unique interface, Art Effect is much like any Mac,
PC, or MUI program.
Personally, I would go for Art Effect first. It's not ideal - it doesn't
have anywhere near the power of ImageMaster - but it's easy to use and
works well.
But if you want to experiment and create wild art effects, go for
Photogenics.
(The names of these two programs ought to be swapped.)
There are still lots of things that DPaintV can do which none of the
other programs handle, including a very complete ARexx interface. If you
can live with an AGA display, it is worth adding DPaint to your
collection at its present absurdly low price. You even get a manual.
PPaint is strictly 8-bit only, but useful for GIF work.
