Second legal challenge to ticket policy

Published: March 26, 1998

The organisers of the World Cup are now facing two legal challenges to the ticket policy which has caused chaos across Europe.

After the deadline for compromise expired last Monday the European Commission began proceedings to bring the matter before the European Court. France is accused of breaking competition laws in their restrictions for the sale of the majority of tickets to those who have French nationality.

The Commission wanted the remaining tickets to be sold across the continent to all competing nations but the organisers refused. There are also interim measures being considered to free the tickets and effectively end their sale to French citizens. Now socialist members of the European Parliament have announced plans to take the organisers before national courts in a political gesture to highlight the problem.

They are also receiving some advice from the Belgian lawyer Luc Misson who won the famous Bosman freedom of contract ruling for professional footballers. He believes the sale of all 2.5 miilion tickets has been in breach of European competition law and that courts could order a resale.
