England add referees to training

Published: March 25, 1998

England have introduced a new training technique that has aroused the interest of their World Cup rivals.

Coach Glenn Hoddle has involved referees in the training session to coach the England players on the new rules involving the tackle from behind. This will be banned from the start of the Finals and will lead to an automatic dismissal if committed during a game. Hoddle has given the referees the power to stop the training session and talk the players through the action to try and encourage the defenders to think about their challenges.

Germany and Norway are two of the countries who are going to try the same idea in their training sessions.
