Bulgarian midfielder banned

Published: March 24, 1998

Midfielder Iordan Lechkov is now banned from playing for Bulgaria by world governing body FIFA unless he gets the express permission of his Turkish club Besiktas.

The Turkish side were granted a ban yesterday after Lechkov walked out on the side to join the Bulgarian trip to Argentina earlier in the month.

FIFA allowed the appeal and now Lechkov must get permission to play for the national side. Lechkov is with the Bulgarian side in Skopje for the game tomorrow night against Macedonia but is now unlikely to play unless Besiktas give the go ahead.
