Fences stay on for the World Cup

Published:January 23rd, 1998

Two venues will have perimeter fencing at the World Cup Finals and four more will soon decide whether to leave their barriers intact.

Lens and St.Etienne have said that the cost of removing fences and then erecting them again for the start of the next French domestic season is prohibitive and the two grounds will not remove the fences. England fans will be behind the fencing for the June 26th match against Colombia in Lens.

Nantes, Toulouse, Lyons and Montpelier will decide on February 15th after more inspections if they will maintain fences there as well but it is not thought likely. Fans in two grounds being fenced in is a depressing site for FIFA who wanted all barriers removed but the World Cup draw itself was marred by a small incursion by young fans in Marseilles.
