Sweden 0 France 0, April 22nd 1998 Published: April 23, 1998
The hosts for this summer's extravaganza could not wait to get back home after this awful match. Skidding about in the wet made it impossible for either side to create anything like a decent chance and
France's latest striker Nicolas Anelka had a particularly poor debut in the difficult
conditions. The best player on show was by far Zinedine Zidane. He is a player with a large frame but he
carved his way through the puddles with ease at times and his sure control
and steady feet put others to shame as the game degenerated into a hit and hope affair
with Sweden launching hopeless balls at a stable French defence. From third in the world four years ago Swedish
football has really sunk and last night they took the French with them into the mud.
