Open season for World Cup training

Published: April 17, 1998

Every side will have at least two completely open training sessions at the World Cup Finals this summer before each game.

Press and public alike will be able to watch the greatest players in the world at close hand go through their paces and this is sure to be a major attraction at the tournament. So much so in fact that a whole new set of security problems could arise.

Brazil,Italy and France to name only three of the competing nations are likely to attract vast numbers to their training camps and the crowds will have to be properly controlled if they are not to disrupt training. The sheer numbers of people wanting to get closer to the stars than they can in any of the World Cup venues may lead to disappointment amongst latecomers and some anger.

It is a great publicity coup for the tournament if it works but the players have to be able to concentrate in the training sessions which the coaches use for a purpose. It looks as if at least two will have to be set aside for meeting fans and the French public but it will add to the spectacle this summer if all goes to plan. Genuine fans will thrill to the sight of the players going through their moves close to them and will not want to miss this opportunity.
