Paraguay squad scarred by row

Published: April 08, 1998

Paraguay have shown the effects of the recent row over team selection in their squad for the friendly against Italy on April 22nd.

Star goalkeeper, team leader and captain Jose Luis Chilavert returns after missing the 1-1 draw against Colombia in New Jersey last month. He was a severe critic of the decision to recall 40 year old midfielderJulio Cesar Romero aka 'Romerito' and missed the game after the row. His inclusion has meant that the veteran is dropped. However coach Paolo Carpegiani has won another battle over control of the team by leaving out striker Jose Cardozo who missed the Colombia match claiming he could not get a visa but who was also supporting the stand against Romerito's selection by his captain.

The only new presence for the trip to Italy is Edgar Aguilera.
