Milan challenged in Pope deal

Published: April 03, 1998

The Major Soccer League in the US is set to frustrate Italian giants AC Milan in their attempts to but defender Eddie Pope from champions DC United.

The MLS want to pay Pope more to stay loyal to the emergent American soccer scene and resist the overtures of Milan who have tracked the 24 year old for the past six months.

Pope has played 19 times for the national side and is a certainty for the squad for France.

Players in the US have a contract with the League and Pope stands to become the best paid defender in US soccer if he accepts the deal. Good performances in the World Cup, however, could lead to renewed interest that would mean the pay structure in the MLS being weakened if the deal with Pope has to be increased to see of the interest of foreign clubs and keep him as a star in the States.
