That Joke isn't funny any more

Published: April 02, 1998

A Portguese radio station sparked scenes of celebration across the country yesterday when it broadcast a statement that Portugal were being allowed into the World Cup this summer.

English speaking actors had been hired to broadcast a message from FIFA saying that Iran had withdrawn for 'security reasons' and that Portugal had been chosen as the 32nd competing country. The station was forced to admit the story was an April Fools Day hoax after crowds were seen celebrating up and down the country. Portugal failed last October to win through to the Finals in June when they ended third in Group Nine behind Germany.
