Real Madrid eye Argentina coach

Published: April 01, 1998

Real Madrid head the queue of European clubs who have been alerted by Argentina coach Daniel Passarella's admission that he is to quit as the national coach after the World Cup is over.

The captain of the 1978 World Cup winners went on to say he preferred to work for a European club. He was the former coach of River Plate before accepting the national role in 1994. Passarella immediately clashed with players over their haircuts and demanded shorter hair amongst the squad. Sweeper Redondo refused and has not played for Argentine national side for three years. He plays for Real in the Primera Liga so that would make an interesting reunion.

Real Madrid are unsatisfied with their League form under Jupp Heynckes although they are chasing their seventh European Cup title and are known to favour a change of coach in the summer to improve their domestic position.
