Report by Rainer Hennies
China, the reigning Asian Champion and '96 Olympic Silver Medalist, started strong but within the space of a minute found themselves 2 goals down. Fitschen scoring in the 22nd minute followed by Meinert at 23 minutes. Germany, the reigning European Champion and World Cup 95 runner-up, controlled the first half.

Showing better technique than the German team in the second half, and aided by many technical mistakes made by the home team China evened the score with goals by Chun Ling at the 46 minute mark, and Wen at 59 minutes. The teams meet again on Sunday, March 22 at Warendorf.

HISTORY OF GERMAN FOOTBALL

The Deutscher Fussball-Bund (DFB, the German Football Association) with approximately 5.5 million members is one of the world's largest associations.

In 1970 the DFB (founded in 1900) leadership finally gave official approval for women's football. Since then over 525,000 girls and women have been registered with the DFB. More than 4,000 of the clubs have women's teams as well as men.

The first Women's Football German Championship took place in 1974, and the first German Women's FA Cup Final was held in 1981.

1982 saw the beginning of the National Team in the international arena with a game with Switzerland that ended in a 5-1 win for Germany.

In 1990 the 20 team 1st Division (Bundesliga) was formed, split into two groups(North and South). Another two teams were added after the political reunification of Germany.

The German National Team won the European Championship in 1989, 1991, and 1995. They were fourth in the 1991 First FIFA Women's World Championship, and won the silver medal in the 1995 World Championship losing to Norway in the Final.

They are one of the top teams in the world and must be considered as one of the favorites for an Atlanta 1996 Olympic medal.
