Soccer-Dutch players lead New England to victory over San Jose
SAN JOSE, California, May 3 (Reuters) - Dutchmen Richard
Goulooze and Edwin Gorter scored goals to lead the New England
Revolution to a 3-1 victory over the San Jose Clash in a Major
League Soccer game on Sunday.
Imad Baba, who assisted on Gorter's goal, scored the first
goal for New England (3-3) in the 21st minute before Wade
Barrett equalized for San Jose (2-6) 15 minutes later.
Goulooze connected for the go-ahead in the 40th minute and
Gorter added an insurance goal in the 63rd.
In Tampa, former U.S. World Cup captain Tony Meola made five
saves in the final 17 minutes to ensure the New York/New Jersey
MetroStars a 1-0 win over the Tampa Bay Mutiny (1-7), who have
lost four straight.
Argentine midfielder Diego Sonora scored for the MetroStars
(3-3), who enjoyed their third consecutive victory.
The Mutiny's fans had already endured a 1-0 home loss
earlier this week to the Columbus Crew.
Midfielder Todd Yeagley scored a spectacular goal, evading
challenges from several defenders before beating former Swedish
international goalkeeper Thomas Ravelli from 13 meters in the
59th minute.
In Fort Lauderdale, defender David Vaudreuil struck twice
within 13-minutes in the second half to boost the Miami Fusion
(4-4) to a 3-2 triumph over the Colorado Rapids (3-4).
David Stebbins, courtesy of a pass from Colombian World Cup
captain Carlos Valderamma, had the Fusion's other goal, while
Jamaican Wolde Harris and Brazilian Marquinho scored for the
Rapids.
Defending champions D.C. United (7-2, 15 points) won both
their games this week by 3-1 scores to move into a first-place
tie with Columbus (5-2, 15) in the Eastern Conference, although
the Crew have two games in hand.
In their first encounter in Washington on Wednesday, sacked
U.S. national team stalwart John Harkes scored twice and set up
a third goal in a victory over the San Jose Clash.
Roy Lassiter, obtained in a trade with Tampa Bay for Roy
Wegerle earlier in the week, scored United's other goal.
Lawrence Lozzano found the back of the net for the Clash.
In Chicago on Saturday, Bolivian international midfielder
Marco Etcheverry scored a goal and created another in the final
four minutes in United's win over the Chicago Fire (2-5).
Etcheverry put in the game-winner in the 86th minute when
his intended pass for Richie Williams rolled past goalkeeper
Zach Thornton. Only two minutes later, Etcheverry's cross set up
the first MLS goal by rookie Ben Olsen.
Lassiter scored again for United with Frank Klopas tallying
for the Fire, who were forced to play the final 25 minutes a man
down after Polish forward Roman Kosecki was red-carded.
In Kansas City, the Los Angeles Galaxy (7-0) won their MLS
record 13th consecutive regular-season game, a 2-0 victory over
the struggling Kansas City Wizards (2-5).
El Salvadoran Mauricio Cienfuegos connected for the third
successive match and Jose Vasquez added an insurance score.
