Soccer-Mexico congress may yield to World Cup
MEXICO CITY, May 6 (Reuters) - Lawmakers of soccer-mad
Mexico said on Wednesday they may postpone a special session of
congress until after this summer's World Cup soccer finals in
France.
"Unfortunately, we have to consider factors which are not
entirely political, such as soccer," Francisco Paoli, a
legislator for the conservative National Action Party (PAN),
told reporters.
Mexico's lower house ended its regular session on April 30,
but legislators planned to call a special session to pass a
series of financial reforms sent by President Ernesto Zedillo
and discuss ways to bring peace to troubled Chiapas state.
Legislators originally said the session would start at the
end of May, but said they had been asked by the government to
put off the session until after the June 10-July 12 tournament
so that Mexicans would not be distracted by soccer and could
focus on politics.
"The Interior Ministry has asked us to consider postponing
the session until after the World Cup," Leonardo Garcia,
another PAN deputy, told reporters. He said lawmakers were
considering the proposal.
