Euro '96
The month-long European Championship came to an end in sudden death. Germany became the first three-times winner with a 2-1 victory over Czech Republic. The deciding goal was scored five minutes into extra time. This is the first game decided by the new "golden goal" rule which stated that the game will be ended when one team scored in overtime. Next time, in the year 2000, the tournament will be co-hosted by Belgium and Holland.
