The number behind the uniform don't really mean anything, but traditionally, #1 is the goalie and #10 is usually the best player on the team, like Pele, Maradona. Things change over the years, now you see goalie wears #22 or any numbers; and #10 is not necessary the best player of the team anymore.

Johan Cruyff started out with Ajax Juniors at the age of 10. He made it to the first team seven years later. In his first big league game, he came on as a substitute, wearing the #14 shirt. Ajax lost that game, but Cruyff scored the only goal for them. The next year, when Cruyff was added to the first team permanently, he insisted on retaining the #14. Since then the number 14 and Cruyff became inseperatable. In fact, a documentary film about him was simply titled '14'.

Cruyff was born on April 25, 1947 in Betondorp, Holland. His family lived right across the street from the Ajax Stadium. So it is no surprise that his career started with Ajax. Shortly after his 10th birthday, he was selected from over 200 kids to join the Ajax youth team.
