Our history was written on his back.
We are his heirs.
But he is his own heritage, the horse.

The Distant Views Artists

Valerie Hinz
(Canadian, b. 1956)

Valerie grew up a Canadian farm girl drawing horses her father had on their farm. She attended the University of Saskatchewan, intending to major in veterinary medicine but quickly changed to art after watching surgery on her own horse. Discouraged in art school, she quite painting for a while. After a few years, she began painting for friends who wanted good renderings of their horses. This resulted in her first large exhibit in 1983 at the Arabian National Show.

In 1986, while recuperating from back surgery she decided to read – mostly books on composition and color. Shortly after she started to paint again and completed her first major work, Romancing the Stones which brought her attention in the world of equine art. Her artwork has received various awards in several group shows and she is a full member of the American Academy of Equine Art. Distant Views is her first solo American exhibition.

Phyllida Meacham
(Scottish, b. 1938)

Phyllida was born in 1938 on a coffee farm in Kenya where horses played a large part in everyday life. She was educated in Kenya until she went to boarding school in England. After finishing boarding school, she spent the next four years at Chelsea School of Art in London studying sculpture under Dame Elizabeth Frink and receiving a National Diploma in Design.

She returned to Kenya in 1959, painting landscapes and racehorse on commission. In 1960, she married and was introduced to polo that soon began to appear in her work. Since the mid 1970's, her sculptures have been exhibited and sold in London. Individuals in Kenya, Europe, America, Australia, Argentina, Japan and Ireland have purchased her work. Since 1990, castings of her equestrian bronze limited editions have been on loan at the International Museum of the Horse and her work continues to be exhibited in Ireland by The Solomon Gallery. Recently, a new relationship was established in America with The Sporting Gallery in Middleburg, VA.

Ms. Meacham’s work has been included in various art publications including The Dictionary of British Equestrian Artists, The Repository of Arts Magazine and Artifact Artists’ Register at the Arthouse Centre in Dublin. Her work has been long noted throughout Europe and this show is her first major U. S. debut.

She is a member of the Scottish Artists and Artist Craftsmen Society, The Friends of the Royal Scottish Academy and an Associate Member of the Society Equestrian Artists.
