A Greyhound's Christmas Wish
by Robin Krautbauer 1995
reprinted by permission
Dear Santa to you I make my wish,
This could be my very last Christmas list.
No time to be frivolous, I must hurry you see,
I'm no longer the best, they no longer want me.
I've heard of places where there are soft beds,
Sofas and pillows to lay your head,
Plenty of food and toys for play,
People who hug you night and day.
I've heard of the warmth the hugs can bring,
And car rides to get you wonderful things,
Large spaces to roam when you feel the need,
A place they will love me for being just me.
My wish, Dear Santa, I clearly state,
My hope as I sit closed tight in this crate,
To ask for myself I know is not right,
But please bring a family to love me tonight.
Our "Track" Record
Since the inception of our California - Orange County and Greater Los
Angeles Chapter of Greyhound Pets of America on October 1, 1995, we have
rescued over 192 greyhounds from the racetrack. To date we have been able
to find homes for 151 of them. Your support made this happen and your
continued support can make many more retired greyhounds' wishes of
finding a home come true.
A Step Back in Time For Greyhounds
Those of us who worked so hard to make the first annual PetCo
Renaissance Faire a success are still reeling from the effort. Those of you
who attended saw the results. Those of you who didn't - where were you?
Image: Volunteers Karen Charpie-Elton and Eric Shelman enjoying the Faire.
St. Elizabeth's Guilde, the horsemen from Medieval Times and well
over 100 performers and vendors set the stage for a true Renaissance Faire.
The GPA "Encampment", which was built by Bob and Carol Vinnacombe,
attracted everyone from the Queen's Court to Don Juan to the King of
Germany who, incidentally, has requested an application for a greyhound. It
was wonderful seeing these folks walking the royal dogs around the faire. At
times the display was so full of nobility, we common folk had to wait our
turns to get a greyhound fix.
The crowd was overwhelmed with the beauty and behavior of our
retired racers. The exposure of them to the public was the largest ever.
Almost everywhere one looked, there were greyhounds. Six of the puppies
came, along with Julie, their mother. Two of Operation Greyhound's puppies
were there as well. Many of our friends from the Internet brought their dogs
along and it was fun putting faces with words.

for a jousting tournament.
If you can imagine a combination Renaissance Faire / Show and Tell /
Greyhound Picnic, you have a good picture of what happened Saturday,
November 9, 1996.
Next year, PetCo will be sponsoring a two day faire and, as they did this
year, will be donating all of the proceeds to our chapter of Greyhound Pets of
America. Let's hear it for PetCo!
Vet's Choice to the Rescue
As you know, we keep from 10 to 40 greyhounds on the farm in
Inyokern waiting to come to foster homes. From the start providing food for
them was a major problem for us. Our volunteers were collecting coupons,
picking up samples, purchasing 20-40 pound bags, etc., and we were
transporting the food up to the farm in very small amounts. Logistically this
was a nightmare, and no matter how hard we tried, the amount of food
collected was never enough to meet the needs of some mighty hungry dogs.
A simple call to Jose Flores of VET'S CHOICE immediately solved our
problem. This premium quality cat and dog food is only available from
veterinarians, and Jose has seen to it that we receive all the food we need to
support the nutritional needs of the greyhounds on the farm. In fact, there
has been an amazing improvement in the hair coats of these animals as well
as very good weight gain. Many of the volunteers who help on the days that
we bring dogs down to place in foster homes have commented that some of
them look better than their own dogs!
Feeding the rescued greyhounds properly is the first essential to our
care of them. Due to VET'S CHOICE's very generous and ongoing
contributions to the dogs, we need not worry about that facet of their care. I
can't tell you what a burden has been lifted from our collective shoulders.
Thank you VET's CHOICE and Jose.

Chances for Greyhounds
Take a chance for a greyhound! That's what we'll be asking participants
to do at our Valentine Benefit Dinner on Saturday, February 15, 1997 and at
our 2nd Annual Picnic in the Park on Saturday, May 3, 1997. Each of these
events will have a raffle to raise funds for our retired racing greyhounds. But
we need your help getting raffle prizes, big or small, expensive or
inexpensive. If you can donate a prize or are able to obtain any prizes we can
use for our raffles, please contact us at (714) 962-0789 or (310) 669-4918.
Help us to give a retired racer a chance for a great retirement!
Greyhound Trivia
(reprinted from Greyhound Tails, GPA/Central New Hampshire
Chapter)
Long before football and TV extravaganzas, the Tournament of Roses
was originally sponsored by the Valley Hunt Club of Pasadena to (1) show off
their horses and hounds (fox hounds and greyhounds) and (2) celebrate the
ripening of the orange.
The first parade was held in 1890 and consisted of horses pulling
flower decorated carriages with greyhounds and fox hounds following.
Various sporting events included a race between two greyhounds and a
racehorse ╤ even though the racehorse was given a running start, the
greyhounds easily won!
GPA Gives Thanks
Image: Queen Elizabeth and her court.
The success of the Renaissance Faire was due in no small part to the
following contributions. In addition to PetCo who conceived of and
sponsored the Faire, and Waltham Pet Foods who donated $5,000 to cover
the expenses of the Faire, we owe a great deal of appreciation to:
Jean Sahr, who sewed all the blue and red tabards for the greyhounds.
Image: Steve Carle relaxing with his "royal" foster hound, Remy.
Joy Moss, who made the leather collars and leashes.
Vans, Inc., makers of tennis shoes, who donated the canvas used in the
Medieval Times arena and in many tent covers, as well as the ribbons that
festively decorated the Faire.
Momentum Textiles, makers of upholstery fabric, who donated the
material used as tapestries and as table covers in the Faire.
Image: Greyhounds at the GPA "Encampment" (clockwise l-r): Ginger,
Tequilla, Maggie and Jillian.
J & B Textiles, makers of various fabric, who donated cotton fabric for
tent covers.
The Sacramento Bag Company, makers of burlap bags, who donated the
burlap used to cover the GPA booth.
Medieval Times, who so generously donated two wonderful
performances.
The Guilde of Saint Elizabeth for the donation of their time and
knowledge and for gracing the Faire with their presence.
Image: "Gypsy" GPA President Joyce McRorie dances with joy after seeing
the results of many weeks of preparation.
The Hay Connection, who provided a generous discount on bales of hay.
Western Waste Management, who donated the dumpster and trash
bags.
All Care Animal Referral Service, who provided an animal ambulance
and vet technician for the day of the Faire.
Officer Ed Blazer and Sgt. Dwyer of the Orange County Sheriff's Office,
who donated their time to assist us with safety and provide educational
literature.
Image: Becky McKenzie with her greyhounds, Skyler and Shay.
Dan & Carla Woodson, Sherri Buckshpan, Robert Vinson Sr., Patricia
Winegar, Natures Sunshine Products, Melanie Snead, Loeta Moore, Jonathan
Basom, David Russ, Dale and Nancy Edmondson and Calvin Cotton, who
provided financial support.
The many Petco employees who did such a great job of selling the
Renaissance Faire coloring pages during the weeks prior to the Faire.
Image: Tom McRorie with Reveille, one of the foster dogs attending the
Faire.
And to the volunteers who persevered through the heat on both Friday
and Saturday to perform countless and sometimes backbreaking tasks, we
know it is your love of greyhounds that propelled you and we can only say
that we are grateful and proud to work by your side.
In the Spotlight
by Karen Charpie-Elton
October 1, 1995. Karen and Phil's backyard. The first four
GPA/CA-OC&GLA greyhounds (Chip, Daphne, Flicka and Zeus) arrive for
baths before they go off to foster homes. The first four foster families arrive,
anxious to meet these greyhounds fresh from the track. One of these new
foster moms is Nancy Madigan.
Image: Nancy's adopted greyhounds, (clockwise from left) Chief, Maggie
and Alex pose with Santa.
Nancy and her husband Jerry live in Whittier with their three
greyhounds Chief, Maggie and Alex. Nancy and Jerry adopted Chief about
three and a half years ago, and were so taken with his wonderful personality
that they had to have another, so Maggie joined the family two months later.
Alex is a more recent arrival: he was Nancy's second foster dog. Alex
apparently felt so comfortable and "at home" in the Madigan household that
he refused to allow anyone else to adopt him. Nancy's daughter, Pam, has
also assisted with our foster dog program by holding our Valentine's Day
fund-raiser at her Long Beach restaurant, the Midtown Cafe.
We asked Nancy:
How did you first become interested and involved in greyhounds?
"I heard a commercial on KFI radio and thought it was a worthwhile
cause, something I just had to do. I called and requested an application and
fell in love with the first greyhounds I met."
Why did you decide to foster for GPA/CA-OC&GLA?
"Somebody (I don't even remember who) called and told me that a new
GPA chapter was starting up in the LA and Orange counties area and they
were looking for volunteers; would I be willing to do something. At that time
I had no idea what, but I love the dogs so much and the need was there, so I
said sure. Little did I know what was ahead!"
How many greyhounds have you fostered in the past year?
"So far nine: Chip, Alex, Cheyenne, Dylan, Elvis, Indy, King, Mick, and
Phantom."
Who would you consider your favorite?
"Alex, probably, since I couldn't part with him, but Elvis also has a
special place in my heart because he was so needy."
Share a special incident that you will never forget.
"Mick's first camping trip. We were staying in a 12 foot trailer with
four greyhounds while the house was being tented, and Mick, who is a very
LARGE greyhound, wouldn't stay in the pen. I shoved all the dogs in the
trailer and left for 5 minutes. When I came back, I opened the door to find
Mick standing in the middle of the table! He looked so funny I just had to
laugh."
How about a unique problem and how you solved it?
"This wasn't really a problem, but I think it's unique, since no other
foster dog has ever done it. Dylan would go outside and howl at nothing,
which got Chief and Maggie howling. Then Jerry would start howling with
them! When the dogs quit howling, Jerry would continue, trying to get them
to howl again. It didn't work, thank goodness, and the dogs always quieted
down when we called them in."
What tip would you give to other foster families?
"First of all, try it! And don't give up if the dog goofs up and makes a
mistake. Remember, they're just learning and everything is so new to them.
Someday you'll look back and smile at the mistakes."
Would you do it all over again?
"Absolutely! I would never say no to a foster dog!!"
Thanks, Nancy, for all your help and support with the dogs you've
fostered so far and all you'll foster in the coming year. We couldn't succeed
in our rescue efforts without you and all the other foster homes ╤ you are all
truly one of (if not the) most important parts of GPA.
Our Wish
Author unknown
If I could ask the angels
To grant one holiday wish,
I would ask that they impart
A loving change in human hearts.
Then they would give each dog and cat
A home with loving care
And everything that walks or flies
Protection everywhere.
Perhaps some day we will realize
How much our life depends
On the care and comfort that we give
To all our animal friends.

Holiday Safety
The holiday season is quickly approaching. But as you celebrate with
your friends and family, don't forget to ensure the safety of your pets. Take
these precautions:
Don't over-indulge your pets with extra treats or table scraps -
especially bones or chocolates, which can make them very ill.
Keep holiday plants out of reach. While pretty, parts or all of some
plants such as holly, poinsettias, and mistletoe, are poisonous.
Use a strong tree stand that won't topple and decorate your tree with
"safe ornaments". Hang fragile ornaments on upper branches.
Choose sturdy pet toys. Remove button eyes or ribbons on stuffed
animals that could cause choking if swallowed.
With all of the additional activity and excitement at this time of year, be
sure your pet has a quiet spot to retreat to if he or she becomes
overwhelmed with all of the hustle and bustle.
Place lit candles where they can't be knocked over.
Watch that your pets don't slip out the door when holiday guests arrive
or leave.
Doggie Tip
Does your greyhound "pass gas", creating poor air quality in your
house? Top food with a generous tablespoon of yogurt -- with Acidophilus
Cultures. Most dogs like the taste, so you don't have to try and hide it in
their food.
All I Want For Christmas
Dear family and friends,
Every year you ask me what I want for Christmas. And every year I rack
my brain trying to think of gifts you can get for me. This year I'm going to
make it very easy for you. The California-Orange County and Greater Los
Angeles Chapter of Greyhound Pets of America has a Greyhound Retirement
Fund to help cover the cost of boarding newly retired racing greyhounds on
a farm until they are placed in a foster home and then finally adopted by a
loving family. It costs GPA $2 a day per dog. Often they are boarding up to 40
dogs at a time. At $2 per dog that is $80 a day times 30 days a month which
amounts to $2400 for the month. And that doesn't include medical and
other expenses.
The problem is that if GPA doesn't have the money, they can't afford to
board this large number of dogs. I hate to think what might happen to the
greyhounds that they couldn't take from the track if they don't have enough
money to care for them. So this year my Christmas wish is for you to send
the money you would have spent on me to GPA for their retired racers. That
way every time I read the GPA Update's list of names of greyhounds adopted,
I'll know that I helped make it possible for them to find a home.
Don't worry about me not having any gifts to open on Christmas day.
I'm going to sit by my Christmas tree with my two greyhounds and give
thanks that someone cared enough to be sure they were given the chance to
find a home. The gifts of love and life are the best gifts of all!
Happy holidays!
P.S. Send your check to:

All in the Family
When our retired racing greyhounds get together, it's just one big
happy family. But for some greyhounds, this is more than just a cliche. We've
been cross-referencing the ear tattoo numbers of the greyhounds our
chapter has rescued, and we've found that we have some brothers and
sisters. If you adopted a greyhound from our GPA chapter (California-Orange
County and Greater Los Angeles), check out our list to see if your greyhound
has a brother or sister that we've adopted out.

Annual Valentine Benefit Dinner
Mark your calendar now, because you aren't going to want to miss our
2nd Annual Valentine Benefit Dinner on Saturday, February 15, 1997. Enjoy
meeting and talking to many other greyhound lovers. You know they won't
be talking about the weather.
You'll also want to reserve Saturday, May 3, 1997, for our 2nd Annual
Picnic in the Park. You not only get to meet other greyhound lovers, but also
the many greyhounds that will be attending along with their owners. Your
greyhound will love joining you for a day of fun, food and entertainment, all
to benefit ex-racing greyhounds.
Watch future UPDATEs for more information.
Greyhounds Love a Parade
Christmas is quickly approaching and GPA has been invited to walk in
two Christmas parades on Saturday, December 7, 1996. This is not only a
great way to show off our beautiful dogs, but also a very enjoyable walk for the
greyhounds. We hope to get as many greyhounds and their owners as
possible to walk in both parades. What could be more impressive than to see
a large group of greyhounds walking down the street. And to join in the
holiday spirit, you can adorn your greyhound in a Christmas scarf, bells,
Santa hat, etc.
The first parade is in the morning in Redlands at 9:30 a.m. If you would
like to walk in this parade, call Joanne at (909) 629-9105 for directions or
information.
The second parade is late in the afternoon in Belmont Shores. If you
would like to participate in this parade, call Paula at (714) 525-9119 for
time and meeting place.
Please join us for one or both parades. There is plenty of time between
the two parades for you and your greyhound to rest. Help us to show off
these beautiful retired racers so others will want to adopt one, too.
