What I do
I'm a Ph.D. student in optics at the
Institute of Optics,
part of the University of Rochester
in Rochester, New York.
I'm mostly studying the concentric-circle-grating, surface-emitting (CCGSE)
semiconductor laser, doing both theoretical and experimental work.
My first paper, "Diffraction characteristics of the azimuthal Bessel-Gauss beam," was published in
J. Opt. Soc. Am. A 13, 962-966 (May 1996).
What else I do
- I'm one of the volunteer moderators for news.answers and the other *.answers newsgroups. Any periodic informational posting (such as an FAQ, or list of Frequently Asked Questions) which is sent to another newsgroup may also be cross-posted to the appropriate *.answers groups, so they're good places to find basic information on all kinds of things.
- In my copious spare time (it's such a cliché, I just had to say it), I maintain Ferret Central, an index of information about pet ferrets, as well as the Ferret FAQ and Photo Gallery.
- I live in the Barnfel, a small co-op in the Corn Hill neighborhood of Rochester, New York.
What I used to do
I did my undergraduate studies at Rice University in Houston, Texas. Among other things, I was a Show Assistant in the Marching Owl Band (The MOB) the entire time I was there. Amazingly, I also managed to get some coursework done, majoring in Electrical Engineering and French.
And now...
