HandiSTATUS version 1.21 (includes 1993 data) is now available via FTP. For those of you who are not familiar with the program see "about HandiSTATUS" below. About HandiSTATUS: The database HandiSTATUS: Help with World Animal Disease Status, is in use in more than 100 countries from around the world. It provides information (both textual and mapped displays) on the global distribution of diseases that must be considered in the international trade of animals and animal commodities. The program will operate in English, French or Spanish. It features maps of distribution of List A, B (OIE/FAO) and List C (FAO) diseases (by region and by species affected). In addition to assisting in risk identification for import/export decisions, it provides access to the OIE's International Animal Health Code recommendations for safe importation of products, lists of reference laboratories and information on disease transmission. HandiSTATUS is presently used on personal computers (it requires 8 MB of hard disk space), however, it will eventually function as a global system which is maintained and updated by the OIE and can be accessed through telecommunication networks. HandiSTATUS will facilitate data entry and submission of emergency, monthly and annual reports by the countries. It is hoped that the use of HandiSTATUS will improve the timeliness, accessibility and accuracy of international animal health information. The following is an example of an FTP session to download HandiSTATUS via FTP, which you should be able to replicate on your own system: ftp tlaloc.iica.ac.cr Remote User Name: hstatus Remote Password: internet1 ftp> binary ftp> cd english (there is a choice of English, French or Spanish) ftp> dir total 4072 -rw-r----- 1 hstatus group 230301 Feb 08 14:38 handiref.eng -rw-r----- 1 hstatus group 1211408 Feb 07 13:35 hs_0195.exe -rw-r----- 1 hstatus group 578674 Feb 07 13:38 hs_d.exe -rw-r----- 1 hstatus group 49263 Feb 07 13:32 install.exe ftp> mget *.* ftp> quit To unpack the compressed executable files, type the filename (minus the extension .exe) and press [Enter]. The daily publication of the Federal Register is the method used by the US government to inform the public of all actions by government agencies. With this overwhelming amount of paper documentation, the task of locating specific information has become tedious, time consuming and very labor intensive. The Text Optimum Retrieval Engine/Federal Register (TORE/FR) system is designed so that users can quickly and efficiently find information in the Federal Register. Other online systems use a structure of directories and files, which have to be traversed to find the required information. With TORE/FR this task has been eliminated. TORE/FR provides a wide range of advanced search types such as proximity, phonetic, spell tolerant, acronym and thesaurus, with a simple point and click access. For easy reference, all reports are displayed with the most recent amendments listed first. You can visit our home page at InterSoft Corporation is providing this for free to demonstrate our text retrieval technology. If you have any questions or suggestions on how we can improve our service, please send us email at bhw@isc.istech.com Bryan Woodley; InterSoft Corporation; bhw@isc.istech.com Voice 908-409-6289, Fax 908-536-5335 ===================================================================== PAPERCHASE ON THE WWW From: Howard L. Bleich, MD; Center for Clinical Computing; Harvard Medical School at the Beth Israel Hospital Boston's Beth Israel Hospital is pleased to announce that PaperChase can be reached through the Internet and the World Wide Web at the following URL: http://enterprise.bih.harvard.edu/www2.htm We welcome you to visit our site, and we hope you will include its URL in your hyperlinks list. A brief description of PaperChase follows. PaperChase permits end-users to search bio-medical databases from computers at Boston's Beth Israel Hospital, a major teaching hospital of the Harvard Medical School. PaperChase now has a home page on the World Wide Web that permits the user with suitable software to establish a TELNET session from the WWW directly to PaperChase. Designed by physicians, PaperChase is widely used for patient care, clinical teaching, and medical research. PaperChase provides convenient access to the National Library of Medicine's MEDLINE, Health Planning and Administration, and AIDSLINE databases, as well as to the National Cancer Institute's CANCERLIT database. Nine million references from 4,000 journals cover topics in medicine, surgery, and dentistry; nursing, pharmacology, and nutrition; cancer, AIDS, and heart disease; as well as hospital administration and many other important issues. Each week, 10,000 new references are indexed and abstracted. PaperChase automatically saves each user's old searches. Artificial Intelligence built into the program maps users' entries to the index terms used by the National Library of Medicine to classify the biomedical literature. The user can view abstracts on-line, print them out, or save them to disk. If an article is of particular interest, for a nominal charge PaperChase can provide a photocopy by mail, by overnight courier, or by facsimile. PaperChase is not free, but there are no subscription charges or monthly minimums. People pay only for what they use. Billing is in one-second increments.
