Description:

To those familiar with the many Sim titles, SimSafari is self explanatory. The object is to simulate an African game preserve, tourist camp and adjacent village which relate symbiotically.

The preserve can be stocked with creatures and plants, water supplies and roads. If predators and prey are not well balanced, the local village is likely to be affected. Villagers might retaliate by poaching or making things otherwise unsavory. In addition, the camp must be outfitted to attract tourists for income and to provide employment for villagers. A well-run camp produces income, and disasters such as fire, locusts and drought can be survived.

It is fascinating to set off events and watch them unfold, whether as diabolical as starting a devastating fire, or as mundane as stocking the park with too many African hares. SimSafari includes fully accessible field notes about species and three advisors who offer tidbits on zoology, micro economics and politics.

Though the age range of 8+ is accurate, younger children can play "successfully" if a parent reads. They may not create the most superior conditions, but they will have plenty of time to play and learn before they run out of money. The only weakness in SimSafari is when no money is left, a kind of limbo sets in. The advisors don╣t notice and continue to suggest only solutions that cost money--the manual offers no suggestions. The game humps along with an eerie sort of volition, but it is easy enough to quit and start a new simulation.

Features:

  • Realistic simulation of African wilderness and village life
  • Online help and extensive field information
  • Website with games, activities and downloadable Teacher╣s Guide

Technical Aspects:

SimSafari installed easily and ran well. The sound was choppy during the intro, but not during play.

Report and Conclusions:

Playing SimSafari is like having time-lapsed surveillance focused on the African Savanna, recording its special challenges in minutia. Beyond video clips and guided tours to virtual observation, SimSafari recreates the interconnection between wildlife, human life and the economy.
