Description:

Red Shift 3 brings all the information and power of a planetarium to your desktop! The interface and controls have been updated, which makes the mass of content easier to navigate. Move through time as well as space when learning about the heavens. There are also integrated Internet links to keep up with the latest scientific discoveries and keep the program content current.

Features:

  • Explore over 1,000,000 mapped objects.
  • Create a Sky Diary for any month.
  • Includes the Penguin Dictionary of Astronomy.
  • Make your own space movies using Active Movie technology.

Technical Aspects:

Installation was no problem; however, we did have an occasional GPF (General Protection Fault) that was caused more by the machine's configuration. Since we sorted out that problem, there were no bugs or other ugly surprises. The graphics are beautiful, and there is a picture gallery we enjoyed.

Report and Conclusions:

All three of my children (ages 14, 5, 4) gathered around to watch this program run, not because I called them, but because they were intrigued by it. This title is a fantastic teaching tool, full of 3-D animations, full-color astro-photography, and will encourage your child to think about the universe without applying any high-pressure. There are awe-inspiring video tours throughout, and some of the topics discussed include the possibility of life on other planets, and how the solar system was formed. It would certainly be appropriate for a classroom or homeschool setting, as well.
