Description:

LEGO Island by Mindscape is a 3D "action adventure" CD-ROM game. The opening scenes do look like fun, as there's a pizza restaurant, hospital, race track, police station and more. Build vehicles step-by-step in each area, then ride the vehicles around LEGO Island. Sounds cool, eh? If only...

Features:

  • Explore, build, race, chase
  • Roleplay through 5 different LEGO characters.
  • Build LEGO vehicles

Technical Aspects:

Legos Island requires DirectX in order to run, and the technical requirements are understated by the company. The interface is pretty clunky, difficult to get around in, and it's almost impossible to walk past columns on the buildings outside.

Reports and Conclusions:

We enjoyed the music. The idea that LEGOS could be fun on a computer sounds like a grown-up idea, not one from kids. Mine would much rather play with their LEGO toys than deal with the frustrations of this program. There's no area for free-form play, building vehicles is done piece by piece as you're instructed. It's certainly an ambitious title, however, it just doesn't WORK. The only program I can think of that's similar in nature is Gryphon's Bricks - at least in that title, you can design what you like and even print the plans for it.
