Description:

Kid Riffs is a program designed to promote the exploration of musical instruments and the different "building blocks" of music. It allows the explorer to choose from over 100 musical instruments and special effects and to hear small portions, or riffs, of everything from "Old McDonald" to Mozart. The game is divided into five areas: Concert Castle, Instrument Inn, Mirror Mansion, Rhythm Room, and Scale Shack. Each area explores such things as pitch, scale, rhythm, and tempo and even allows the child to record his or her own compositions.

Features:

  • Separate areas to explore different aspects of music
  • On screen help from the main character, Kid Riff
  • A "click-by-click" guide and a quick reference guide
  • Develops familiarity with musical terms and instruments

    Technical Aspects:

With Windows '95, this game was a snap to install and run. The music was clear and the program ran smoothly.

    Report and Conclusions:

Kid Riffs was designed for kids of all ages! Its format is easy and fun to use and encourages exploration and allows kids to become familiar with many instruments and types of music. My kids both love the program and my daughter especially loves listening to both the familiar favorites and her own "musically interesting" compositions. While this program may not assure that you have a "budding Beethoven" in your house, it will provide many hours of fun for your kids.
