Description:

JumpStart Adventures 4th Grade: Haunted Island is a role-playing game for children that is sure to offend some. For one thing, Mrs. Grunkle, a witch/4th grade substitute teacher, has turned 13 children into monsters. Further, in their rescues, kids explore a haunted island with mummies, ghouls and ghosts and more at every turn. The saving grace for this title is that kids will also play nine curriculum building games - all of them extremely innovative and fun.

Features:

  • Grade-based learning.
  • Earn keys and objects you'll need.
  • Progress reports for parents.
  • Three levels of difficulty.
  • Extremely innovative games - we haven't seen anything like them!

Technical Aspects:

We had no problems at all with this title. The 3D graphics and environments are absolutely stunning. It's obvious that a great deal of care went into the production of Haunted Island, from the program itself to the packaging. The box offers an excellent preview of the adventure inside, but be aware that it cannot give you the sensation of walking through the woods - very eerie and beautifully done. The actual program seems to me to be darker than the graphics on the box convey.

Report and Conclusions:

Well, you've been warned - if you're offended by skulls, ghouls and other Halloweenish-type creatures, this title is NOT one you'll enjoy. However, if you can get past that, the content is excellent. Our favorite was "Division and Decimals" in which you (a vampire) outwit the ghosts by using long division. If you successfully use all the numbers, your coffin appears and you can climb in!
