Description:

HyperSign is an interactive dictionary of American Sign Language. There are over 2,000 words in the database - and full-motion video is used to display the movements for each. Additionally, the dictionary can be set for children, teens or adults. There are even games for various ages - from crossword puzzles to Tic Tac Toe. ASL rules are included, and an extensive on-line bibliography is available. This title can be used to learn ASL or to improve signing skills.

Features:

  • Self-paced instruction
  • Illustrations of over 2000 words.
  • Finger spelling.
  • ASL conventions.

Technical Aspects:

The title installs with the CD-ROM and three floppies. There's a noticeable improvement in graphics when they're running in 16 bit (thousands of colors) instead of the regular 256 colors. There aren't any sound effects or music added, and no verbal instructions, either.

Reports and Conclusions:

As a child, I taught myself to ASL fingerspell from an encyclopedia! I've always wanted to learn to sign but haven't had the time to take classes - this is a perfect solution. The three levels (child, teen, adult) are actually different, with graphics and illustrations in cartoon style for children, using a teen aged instructor for that age. I also taught my oldest daughter to fingerspell, and she's very excited about learning more. If you're looking for a sign language program, HyperSign is an excellent way to begin.
