Description:

Driver's Education '98 from Sierra was being shown off at E3 this past June, and I spent quite a bit of time playing with the driving simulation. They had foot pedals, a large screen television and steering wheel all hooked up - the realism is amazing! Part of the time I actually tried to drive and the rest of the time I concentrated on giving the instructor, "Driver Ed," a heart attack! This is a serious title - Sierra guarantees that Driver's Education will help you pass your state's actual written driver's test or they'll refund your money (within 30 days of purchase.) The Deluxe Edition includes a Grand Prix 1 steering wheel by Thrustmaster - the price for the computer software only is $39.99.

Features:

  • Deluxe package includes software and Thrustmaster GP1 Steering Wheel.
  • Over 60 lesson plans.
  • Customized with traffic laws for all 50 states and DC.
  • Learn defensive driving techniques.
  • Easy install steering wheel fits any PC game port.
  • Pedals are not required.

Technical Aspects:

Installation took 50 megs of hard drive space, which is not bad, considering the expanse this title covers. Once we got the Steering column hooked up and configured, we were ready to roll. The steering wheel works very nicely - it actually did feel very realistic.

Report and Conclusions:

A few years ago, (ha!) my best friend, Martha (hi, BOSS) and I took Driver's Ed together. The most frustrating part of the process were the simulations we endured, because they were very unrealistic and unresponsive. Of course, the MOST fun was the practice driving on the "driving range" where we knocked over cones and laughed hysterically as the passenger opened the door and put the cones back before the teacher noticed. In spite of all that carrying on, we both became pretty good drivers!

This program does exactly what it sets out to do: teaches Driver Education in a safe environment, without risking an accident. I have a 13 year old who can't wait to get started, and believe me, we plan to use it extensively before she's old enough to get her learner's permit. I'd much rather have her involved in a virtual crash than a real life one.
