Description:

The Digital Frog claims to be "frog-friendly" software for biology students, and it does live up to the promise. We reviewed the educational/classroom version, which comes with a Teacher and Student workbook. Yes, this is the program that allows for virtual dissection of a frog - a wonderful idea. I remember cutting up a poor dead creature in middleschool biology class, and what remains with me is the horrible stench, not the "experience" or other information.

Features:

  • Quicktime movies illustrate clearly.
  • Choose simple or advanced dissection.
  • Examine a frog's anatomy.
  • Explore the ecology, lifespan and behaviors of frogs.

Technical Aspects:

This program has a note about resolving problems running under Windows 95, but we had no problems whatsoever. The video ran smoothly and the audio was clear.

Report and Conclusions:

This program is an excellent addition to any classroom or home setting. The content is professionally presented, and I appreciated the ability to stop the movie now and then. There was no blood during the dissection, and with the workbook, your child will learn and incorporate the information as knowledge. While The Digital Frog easily takes the Kids Domain Gold Award for Excellence in Children's Software, it is currently being updated - those who purchase the program will receive a registration form for a free upgrade.
