Description:

Do you have a taste for blood? A hankering to dance with a skeleton? If one of your favorite "haunts" is a graveyard, then this is game you've been "dying" to play!

Choose Your Own Nightmare: The Halloween Party is one of Brilliant Digital Entertainment's multipath movies. More of a movie than a game, the viewer can determine the outcome of the game by choosing the path taken at designated intervals in the game. Based on the Choose Your Own Nightmare books by Bantam, this movie is very like the books, except with more humour.

Well, it's Halloween night and time to decide who's party you're going to attend. Will it be the old geezer down the hall, or the new girl on the 13th floor? Hmmm, tough choice! Actually, at this point, it's irrelevant because no matter which party you choose, you're going to end up on a witch's bad side. Turns out the witch is the mother of the new girl, and she isn't too happy with the way her daughter's talents are progressing and so Mom decides to take matters into her own hands. She puts a curse on you and your buddy: if you survive 3 of her scares, then you are free. However, if you don't, then you are turned into what your costume is!

Features:

  • Alternate paths
  • Horror
  • Humour

Technical Aspects:

Installation was simple, the InstallShield Wizard took care of everything. This game is meant to be run on a system having MMX, but will play just fine without it. The graphics are in 3D and are probably awesome in MMX, on my machine (no MMX) they were good.

Report and Conclusions:

BDE has a whole line of multipath movies for all different ages. We previously reviewed Popeye and the Quest for the Wooly Mammoth and remarked then that the movie wasn't truly multipath, you were just sent down a side path and soon rejoined the one true path. Well, in Choose Your Own Nightmare: The Halloween Party, you actually are choosing alternate endings. Some of the paths are short diversions, but many of them are true divergences and will have different endings. We played it 3 times, with 3 different endings. Parents, this is a horror movie, with lots of scary stuff (somewhat similar to the Goosebump series of books). The age rating on this game is 8-12, but it may be too frightening for the younger kids.
