Broderbund has discovered a need in the software arena and filled it quite nicely with The Amazing Writing Machine. This program will make your child's homework easier and better organized. It's easy to figure out and operate, and makes writing FUN again!
As for my personal experience with this title, my oldest daughter has been diagnosed with a language development disorder. She doesn't like to write, although she can, with much encouragement and support. She spent an hour with this program, produced an original poem and printed it out with a cover page!
If it happens that your family also owns the KidPix Studios (any), the tools work the same way and the stamps are interchangeable - they can be used in The Amazing Writing Machine.
Other Features and Cool Stuff!
The Font tool - allows changes of font, sizes and style. The Secret Coder - change your text into code form! You can even print a de-coding key. The Rebus Picture - gives symbols to use in place of text. Bright Ideas - has several options, including Brainstorm, Quotes, Jokes, Corny sayings, Fun Facts and even word suggestions! The Reader Robots will read your text aloud - try them all out! The InfoSaurus provides access to the database - find occurrences of a word, then paste into your project, or it will provide rhymes for a word you type in. The Address Book contains addresses of many publications, organizations, and famous people to write to. You can also add names and addresses to the Book!
Installation and Technical
Installation was a breeze, however, some of the time this program froze up my machine and we had to reboot. There weren't any other windows open at the time, so there really isn't any telling why it acted that way. Make note of the recommended computer configuration - this program would run pitifully slow on a 386. This program is also available in a 3.5" high-density floppy format.
Is it Worth it?
Yes! Whether your child is an aspiring writer or HATES to compose a paper, this is an excellent program. Kids are naturally creative and this title will enhance and encourage them to explore their ideas in an environment that can be converted into printed material - then they can show off what they DID!
