Websites for Girls, Part 3

I've been busy checking out more girl sites on the web, and here is one that I've been playing on, umm, I mean researching!

Girl Games, Inc., has a site for preteen and young teens called Planet Girl. There are five areas to explore: Girl*illa World, Ch-Ching, Blah, Blah, Blah!, For Real, and Zap. In Girl*illa World you can read short and informative essays on issues with anatomy, as in aromotherapy, acne, breast size, anorexia, hair, etc. in The Adventures of Phat Girl. Pink Kitty is a short cartoon that asks a rhetorical question at the end, and Girl on the Street asks a question that you can answer, and check back to see what others answered. Ch-Ching is basically the online store for Girl Games, Inc.'s products, namely their All About Me series. Blah, Blah, Blah! is, you guessed it, their chat area. You can also send Planetgrams (online postcards with sound) from this site. For Real offers a list of links for girls, a mini-mag called Girls Interwire that has stories and girls' opinions on earlier stories, along with girls' views on selected subjects, and a fun quiz. Zap is the puzzle place, with a make your own word find that you can print out or email, many jokes and puzzles that are contributed by girls, and a download area.

Planet Girl is a fun place to visit, and the puzzle area has many jokes and brain teasers. Planetgrams are fun to send to your friends (I sent my editor one), and the response section to the stories in Girl Interwire is nicely done. The list of links is extensive, but it is strange that they included MTV, as the target audience is 8-14, and some of the subject matter on the MTV site is inappropriate for this age group. The chat area has moderators, but I don't know how often they check in. Anybody can log in, so if anybody is who he or she says they are is anyone's guess. Girls can write in Pig Latin and choose what color they want to write in while they chat. Girls can also leave messages for other people. There are many fun things for young girls to do here, and they may learn something as well.
